Weekly Photo Challenge: DELICATE
“Give me the man who will surrender the whole world for a moss or a caterpillar, and impracticable visions for a simple human delight.”
Bruce Frederick Cummings
Here in the lowcountry, we are surrounded by beautiful Live Oak trees, which harbor the most delicate of plants, Spanish Moss. It seemed to me that its fragile, graceful nature was a perfect match for this week’s Photo Challenge: Delicate. The moss hangs from the branches of the oaks and takes its nourishment directly from the air, and it’s moisture from the rain. Our humidity is the perfect environment to stimulate its growth.
“I shall wait beneath the moss, until the flowers are fragrant.”
Hideki Tojo
The delicate lace of the Spanish Moss adds immeasurably to the beauty of the trees, and their symbiotic relationship creates a visual feast for us all. Sunlight filters playfully through the dainty strands creating patterns that change as the breeze controls their movements.
For a time, it was feared that the moss was creating problems with the trees, but a recent study proved that to be untrue. Not only is it non-damaging, it actually provides a bit of shelter from the intensity of our sunlight as well as a wonderful material for the local birds to line and/or rehabilitate their nearby nests.

These photos are just gorgeous!
Thanks for visiting, liking so many posts and following my blog. I love your photos and will be back to have a closer look as soon as I can.
Well thanks back! Enjoy your posts and your approach. Looking forward to more to come!
I do that so often it’s getting embarassing 🙂
I had to google Kaiwah to find out where the lowcountry is Tina ! Fascinating I never knew about all those little sea islands around the coast there, but then not that suprising I guess from living here in the UK. The Spanish moss looks like shanks of sheeps wool hung on the branches !
Lovely images to fit the theme Delicate as well as the underlying message !
Thanks PT; I love that you cared enough to look us up! The “low country” refers to our being at sea level. Our oak trees are veaurifully gnarled because of the sea salt in the air!
I meant beautifully, sorry about the typo!
Really like that first image, great shot!
Thanks David–my reward for getting up at 5am to get there before sunrise! Appreciate your stopping by 🙂
Thank you for visiting and following my blog. Your photography is brilliant!
As a beginner, your work is something to aspire to.
Take care,
Elisa
Thanks so much Elisa!
I like them all, but “Daybreak” is breathtaking!

The best light always requires a little sacrifice 😀 I figure I’ll sleep when I’m dead 😀

Hey Patricia! Thanks for the PB – love the zebra 🙂
What a cushy nest that moss would make. Practical and pretty..a good combination. Lovely shots, Tina.
thanks Sharon 🙂
I totally agree…the sepia moss sort of reminds me of a scene in a scary movie….what a contrast!! Love these!!
Thanks April! Perhaps I can sell it to the next vampire sequel!
Nice!
Thanks Jane 🙂
Lovely quote and lovelier pictures… WOW!!
Thanks s1ngal!
Very lovely.
Thanks Jane.
in agreement, the golden light of the colored version is warm and welcoming, while the sepia is a bit foreboding.
Thanks Vicki; we do love our light, don’t we?!
