Weekly Photo Challenge -Street Life
“A street that you have never visited is a book that you have never read. You never know what you are missing.”
Mehmet Murat Ildan
Our challenge this week is to illustrate “street life.” Since I am traveling, and am a bit late with my post, I’ll keep it simple and share this long-time favorite capture from Cambodia.
Street life can mean many things to many people. For example, today I’m surrounded by the busy, noisy streets of New York City. By comparison, yesterday we had a peaceful drive along the winding country roads of New York’s beautiful Hudson Valley, while the day before we experienced the quiet streets of a family wedding in a fairly deserted New Jersey beach town. None of these however, are in any way similar to the family outing pictured above, which was an opportunity to capture the essence of a small, peaceful country that couldn’t be more different than the world in which I live.

Wonderful capture Tina! This scene is very familiar in India too! You must visit if you haven’t, it will be as vibrant as you can imagine. And I loved NYC and NJ when I visited there last year! Completely contrasting like you said.
Thank you Avinash – India is on my list of must-see. I just love the rural scenes, don’t you?!
I love your Cambodia images, but this one is truly one of your best. One of the best in this challenge as well, I would think π
Hey Madhu! Thanks for your lovely compliment and for dropping by π
Tina, great photo!
Many thanks Sue!
“Peaceful” a very good description….just love this one!!! Enjoy NYC…wishing great weather for you!
Thanks April – weather was lousy but family was great!! Always good to get back home π
I love this one!
Thanks Mark – that was a wonderful trip for a photographer. Everywhere we looked there was another capture just calling out to be made! Appreciate your stopping by.
What a superb photo Tina. And yes, so different from where we live. A sense of peace is conveyed through the photo, but the expression on their faces express something different. A really great capture !
Many thanks Jocelyne, yes you have to wonder what was working behind their eyes, dont’ you?! Appreciate your visit and comment.
Dear Tina,
I hope you are having a great time in New York. It’s easy to see why your pick for the challenge is a longtime favorite, I forgot time as I got absorbed in it. What a different world to the cold North.
I love visiting new streets. And sometimes deliberately without a map – a good chance to get wonderfully lost! π Thanks for the great quote.
Love, Dina
Hi Dina – thanks for the lovely comment. NY was terrific but I was happy to leave the cold northeast to return to sunny South Carolina!! Appreciate your stopping by!
I can see why it is a favourite… great capture.
Many thanks CTB!
The difference between the streets is amazing π
I agree! Enjoyed seeing everyone’s efforts this week π Thanks for your visit and comment.
Catching an unusual street scene is the challenge. This one is super though in India a bullock on the streets is not really unusual π
LOL, I suppose different depends on who and where you are! Thanks Dilip!

My pleasure P-I-L! Thanks for your visit and comment.
… Would love to be able to decipher those expressions Tina … they’re all very focused on something … perhaps it’s just staying on track π
Great photo !
π that or trying not to run me over PT LOL!
Really amazing pic π
Thanks CGT!
π
We aim to please LOL!
Wonderful photo, composition, and movement captured so simply as the cattle lean into the wagon tongue, apprehension on the children’s faces. Very nice.
Thanks John! Yes there is definitely some apprehension going on–perhaps the oxen are skittish too!
Do you think the young man was getting his driver’s permit?
Sure looks it, doesn’t it?!
Great capture! Happy travels you lucky thing you! π
Many thanks! Lucky indeed although in a perfect world it would be a much warmer time of year for my visit π
What a great shot. I love the square format too.
Thanks SMM-the format was meant to eliminate any distractions from the cart and it’s inhabitants π appreciate your comment.
Fabulous image – amazing how different are the lives of others.
One of the many reasons I love to travel! Thanks for stopping by π
Street life is who you are and where you happen to be at the time.
How true Al!
such a fabulous photo!
Thanks Cindy! I was very excited when I saw them coming down the road!
Fascinating photo- you captured them in their everyday lives, seemingly merely intent on arriving at their destination, but for me, so exotic . A lesson in contrast, an illustration of how other cultures broaden my horizons, even in the mundane.
Thanks Amy! So exotic to us, so normal to them π
Amazing to see what is everyday life for another part of the world. Also like the contrasts of The New York area. Street life certainly is not always urban! Enjoy your trip!
Thanks Alexandria! Amazing how different life can be, whether a few miles or a continent away!

Wonderful image, Tina! Peaceful? Maybe. Sad, too.
P.S. I had no idea that there is Ghent in NY. The only one I know is in Belgium π
They didn’t seem sad in person really, just focused on the goal. Thanks Svetlana–yep, Ghent is a lovely small town along the Hudson River. Maybe named after it’s European counterpart??
Whoa! Am just imagining a day in the life of this family.
It does remind me our peaceful simple neighbors, the Amish. Life in the sloow lane. Really nice capture T!
Thanks Diane. Yep would love to return to Lancaster area w camera in hand!
As always you’ve found an excellent subject for the photo challenge. Love this composition!
Many thanks Rusha. This one stayed on my kind a long time π
I really like that photo. Small and peaceful sounds very good to me.
Amen to that Bill! Quite a variety of noisy and quiet this weekend!

I can imagine, especially coming from Kiawah…
So you’re in my old territory – the wedding on the shore must have been interesting this time of year. Plenty of spring blooms? But I heard there was really cold weather over the weekend. I love the Hudson Valley – I lived in Hastings-on-Hudson and also up in Brewster; beautiful country. The street life above is just a bit different from the city you’re experiencing now, I think…I look forward to hearing about your trip and seeing pictures!
So pretty up there. Our kids have a new home in Ghent so we were nearby. No blossomed abs lots of flooding. It’s been a brutal winter up here.

Oh, that’s WAY up there! Really beautiful – I use to love to drive up there – and yes, they’ve had a terrible winter. I am appreciating the steadiness of Seattle weather! π

New York! That’s a place I have yet to visit. Will have to put that on the agenda. Most interested in the countryside, not so much the big city. π
Thanks John! Fortunately in NY you can do both very easily!
A picture that shows a different world, but by the looks on those faces the family on board this cart look very concerned that they are going to run you over as they head towards you!
Jude xx
They were indeed concerned about something Jude, but fortunately it wasn’t me! May have been the young Jan’s first time on the reinsM
I mean man’s, not Jan’s
As always a beautiful picture that takes us to a world so different from our own and shows us what we are “missing”. Thank you Tina. Best wishes.
Thanks Andrew, appreciate your lovely compliment.
My pleasure.
