TAKING A LEAP – WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE “OOPS”
“He who leaps for the sky may fall. But he may also fly.”
Lauren Oliver
This past spring I posted about a photo shoot I did with some friends on a private farm that had become an incredible bird sanctuary. When I saw this week’s challenge “Oops”, I thought immediately of the tiny baby birds who were venturing out for their first attempt at flight. Clearly this is where the phrase “out on a limb” originated!
“Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities.”
Gloria Steinem
The birds’ nests were all located in trees that overhung a large lagoon, and one misstep meant a serious dunking or a much worse fate – sadly we saw several of the latter. As the birds made their way out of the nest and onto the branches we could see how tentative they were, and how much difficulty they had balancing their big feet and disproportionately heavy bodies using their tiny little wings.
“My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to him in song.”
Psalm 28:7 NIV
So too, we humans face choices and challenges continually. What runs through our minds as we consider our options, and at what point are we willing to make a leap over each hurdle? Are we optimists who have faith in our decisions, or pessimists who prefer to look the other way when new opportunities arise?
“All growth is a leap in the dark, a spontaneous act without the benefit of experience.”
Henry Miller
Yesterday I was speaking with some friends about those moments in life that carry profound meaning and are never forgotten. I had one such moment long ago when my father advised me that “There is no such thing as a bad decision. You made a decision and then you make it the right one.” I’ve returned to that advice many times since, and it has never failed me.
“Sometimes you just have to take the leap and build your wings on the way down.”
Kobi Yamada
Hopefully, like the baby birds, our leaps of courage will lead us to a place of grace and beauty. Just think about those tiny egrets, and remember them the next time you face a difficult choice. As Frederick Wilcox once said “Progress always involves risks. You cna’t steal second base while keeping your foot on first.”
Here’s wishing everyone a week filled with leaps of confidence 😊
Hi Tina – catching up after the holidays. Wonderful post!!!
Tina, I looked at your photos first. They are superb and funny! The I read your words. So true what you said, and It’s my luck that I stopped by here today.
Such a beautiful post, Tina. I absolutely love the advice your dad gave you. So much optimism comes through it, isn’t it. 🙂
Superb advice!
What a wonderful series of photographs Tina! Beautiful! 🙂
Much appreciated Adrian!
The Lauren Oliver quote is priceless…Love your wonderful photo series.
Thanks so much Charlie! I loved that quote too 😊
Beautiful pictures as always!! “Moment of Truth” is my favorite!
Actually, that one might earn a place in your blog one day! He has that snark down to a tee 😀😀
All good words to remember. The baby bird pictures are sweet. I couldn’t find something appropriate for this week’s challenge. And on top of that, there’s been the Christmas social whirl which means that I didn’t try very hard anyway.
LOL, thanks WC. Have a great holiday and we’ll see you in the next challenge!

Reblogged this on that little voice and commented:
Tina Schell’s photographs and her writing are things of beauty. Enjoy and visit her blog at travelsandtrifles.wordpress.com
You Rock LV, thanks!
Great post. Going to reblog it if that’s okay with you.
Much appreciated Little Voice – have at it!
These Great Egret babies are adorable, I love every single picture of them. They are new in life, but then they get a hang of it!
Thanks Tiny – I know we share a love of our avian friends!
These are fabulous shots! I love how you interrupted “oops” – a natural “oops” when a baby bird is taking its first flight.
Thanks so much Debby – I think a video of their exploits would have shown how truly “oops” it really was LOL!!
I love this post Tina! The baby bird is so precious and you truly captured a special moment. Beautiful.
Thanks so much Nicole, glad this one touched your heart!
Leap of confidence, here I come! 🙂 🙂 Fabulous captures, Tina. I could take ‘Ready steady go’ home with me, but he wouldn’t have much fun with no mates.
LOL, thanks Jo. Interestingly the bird siblings seemed quite close to one another–playing with and protecting each other….not something I’d have expected!
That must have been lovely to observe 🙂
Memorable as always Tina particularly your father’s advice to you. I think of my parents often and remember all that they did for us to ensure we could cope with all that life would throw at us. So much to thank them for. It’s just a shame they can’t be here to see how well they succeeded. Have a great week ahead. Glad you enjoyed my Oops 🙂
I too think how sad it is that our parents never got a chance to enjoy the results of all of their love and hard work. Mine sadly died quite young. But they live on in their children, don’t they? Thanks for your visit Andrew – as always lovely to hear from you!
They do indeed; and in their grand children and now great grand children 🙂
😊😊😊
Beautifully captured images.
Thank you Jane!
Nice take on the challenge. What a great photographic opportunity, to see these birds just as they are learning to fly.
It was indeed PJB, and I loved every minute of it! Thanks for stopping by.
Oh so true! that first quote is so spot-on! and your pictures so lively!
Thanks so much Juls!
beautiful post – and that first image is especially heartwarming.
earlier today, before i read you post, i was reminded of some of my Dad’s advice to me before i left home for an extended time after high school, and i had to think of it again as i read your words. advice that is quite unrelated, and yet it is wonderful to have some advice to turn to, something which endears our parents to us even more.
my Dad’s advice – even on cloudy days, you can know that the sun is still shining. and it’s similar with God. even in those times when he feels far away, he really is not. sometimes there’s just something clouding our perception.
Thanks Kris, especially for sharing your father’s lovely advice. I think it’s all any parent can hope for, that their words should have a profound and lasting effect on their children. If only all kids were so lucky as to have parents who love them and guide them with wisdom.
Such an uplifting post with uplifting quotes, Tina. I actually really like what you dad told you – that in itself is a marvelous quote. We have to live with every decision that we make, and although we may not like the immediate consequences of them at times, often we find a way to soldier on and carry on. Love the photos, and good variety – the bird hunched over, and then with its wings spread open. Sort of got me thinking that it is eager to fly but doesn’t know where to go and when to go…or that it can’t decide if it’s feeling hot or cold 😀
Thanks Mabel – some posts are hard, others nearly write themselves. This one, happily, was the latter! Appreciate your thoughtful comment.
Great take on this week’s challenge Tina. I was wondering where you’d go with this one 🙂 Good words of advice too…well done.
Thanks Andy – I just loved watching these little guys floundering around between the branches. They were really quite comical to see!!
WOW….POWERFUL words with POWERFUL images to back them up……a beautiful post Tina!!!!!
Thanks April – nature at her best I think!
Nice pics.
Thanks Cris
A good message for me in my move home. I’m sure I will have some leaps that will challenge me on my way to full recovery. Beautiful photos. Love you Pam

You may have leaps but we’ll all be there to catch you – there will be NO dunking for you my friend! Love you too – good luck tomorrow!
Love that Yamada quote… I think many wings are feathered on the ” way down..” Of course you know I love all the birds…
😊 Thanks Linda – I’m with you on that my fired! And I love them as much as you do.
Young ones taking a leap of faith! Great pics as usual.
Thanks John! Had fun making these captures. I was so excited by the number and variety of birds the day was pure joy!
Great captures of these birds. Thank you for sharing your father’s advice, Tina!
My pleasure Amy. The best thing we can hope is that our words live on, isn’t it?!
Really like these just-before-take-off photos. And what a lifelong message you are sending us as we all launch into something — sometimes with success, sometimes not. Beautiful.
Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. Let’s hope more are successful than not!!
What an amazing series of images.
(and your Father’s advice is just what I needed to hear this week – thanks for that).
Thanks so much for the feedback Vicki – I found it really important this week myself!
So cute, Tina. But “Moment of Truth” scoops the pool as far as I’m concerned. The expression conveyed is priceless! 🙂
janet
LOL Janet “scoops the pool” is a new one on me!! I’ll admit I was very happy when I saw that expression as I downloaded my shots from that day!
Hi Tina. That’s an interesting quote from your dad. I can see why you return to it again and again. I had never thought of making the decision “work” quite that way. Thanks! And those tentative and scary first flight moments are beautifully captured.
THanks so much Patti – of course, my dad was my hero so I’m prejudiced but I think he was a really special guy who offered me words to live by more than once.
A perfect interpretation and a good reminder for all of us! Beautiful photos, as always! The babies are so fragile-looking and the last one is simply stunning.
Thanks Lex – they morph from really ugly newborns into clumsy fledglings and from there emerge as magnificently beautiful creatures. All in the space of just a few weeks. It’s amazing really.
So cute. Great pictures.
Thanks Connie – it was a really fun outing!
Wonderful photos. It’s incredible the time between hatching and taking their first flight is so short. For robins, I think it’s three weeks.
Yes it really is amazing. Interestingly the sanctuary had birds of every single stage of development, from egg through adult. It was truly fascinating.
That must have been very cool to see every stage of development.
I love the “Moment of Truth” photo. His look is just smirky enough to make me think he’s saying, “Come on girl–I haven’t got all day!” 😀
Smirky? Is that a word?!?!?! I agree the expression is priceless tho, isn’t it?!
Wonderful photos of such cute birds, great words of wisdom, and I love the header photo as well. “You can’t steal second base while keeping your foot on first” – wonderful and made me smile. 🙂
Thanks Judy – and I love your comment. A lot!!
The baby bird in the first one put a smile on my face. Too Cute …!!!
Nice elections for the challenge.
Isadora 😎
Thank you Isadora – he/she was truly comical as he hopped, clinging, from branch to branch!
wonderful post!
Many thanks Gray days!
Tina, I fell in love with your first image.
Aw, thanks Sally, he’s a hard one not to love 😊
A lovely, thoughtful post beautifully illustrated by those little egrets. Love the first one!
Many thanks Jude – he was a really special little tyke 😊
T – This particular blog really touched me. As always, the photos were wonderful but I so enjoyed what you had to say. Well done!!
Thanks so much Girlfriend, so nice to hear such a special reaction.
Great way to illustrate the theme — and to use the shots of all of the ugly chicks getting ready to fly. We’ll go again in the spring. And I also like your father’s advice.
Hey Jack! Thanks so much – and I look forward to next year’s birds!
S/he’s very sweet.
Excellent series!
Many thanks Rabirius!
Adorable! Excellent shots for the theme, Tina.
Thanks so much Janie!
As always, your images and words touch a chord in my being…today you gave me wings!
You are so special Wilma, your comment gave ME wings!
