Over the Rainbow – WPC: Surprise

“Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”

Maya Angelou

RAINBOW OVER SCOTLAND

There are surprises, and then there are surprises😊. One of my favorites is the beauty of a rainbow as it appears suddenly after a storm. In the capture above the rainbow’s colors are made stronger by the depth of the cloudy sky and the glorious light for which the country is so justifiably famous.

KIAWAH RAINBOW

KIAWAH RAINBOW

“An optimist sees rainbows when there is rain.”

Debasish Mridha

Here on Kiawah we are fortunate to see rainbows relatively frequently – although I suppose that means we see more storms too.  This particular capture was one of the most amazing rainbows I’ve seen because of the way it appeared from end-to-end, and highlighted the grasses around the 18th green of the very famous Ocean Course.

DOUBLE RAINBOW

DOUBLE RAINBOW

“Your laughter is warm rain, and you are the rainbow.”

Lori Jenessa Nelson

Double rainbows are very rare – and even more rare is a double rainbow when I happen to have camera in hand.   The capture above is one of my personal favorites. I made the shot during a holiday with good friends on Prince Edward Island, and especially loved the way it was contrasted by the deep clay color of the sandy beach.

RAINBOW, VICTORIA FALLS

RAINBOW, VICTORIA FALLS

“It isn’t the pot of gold but the rainbow that colors our world.”

Richelle E Goodrich

Last but not least, a golden (in more ways than one) oldie. I came across this capture a few months back as I was going through my transition from Aperture to Lightroom. The rainbow was created by the waters of Victoria Falls capturing the colors of sunlight. We loved our helicopter ride over the falls but this capture was made as we hiked through the forest to see and hear the falls close-up. Quite an adventure and an amazing memory.

Here’s hoping your storms always end with a rainbow.

  1. Quite interesting to see how these challenges are interpreted. My favourite is “Rainbow over Scotland. I also hae a few rainbow photos but just didn’t think of using that but no not going copy cat you Tina, mine is already done

    • You’re very kind April, thank you. That Ocean Course shot was just a bit of wonderful luck. We were there for dinner with some out-of-town guests – how lucky were THEY?!?!

  2. Thanks for the promotion of PEI’s beaches and rainbows. We often get doubles but not full ones. The light on the golf course beneath your local rainow is amazing.

    • We were amazed by the beauty of PEI and really enjoyed our visit Bunty. Interestingly I posted that shot a while back and had an enquiry from a woman who wanted to print it for her aunt’s 90th birthday. The aunt was from PEI and loved rainbows. how could I say no!!!

  3. Double rainbow. Your camera ready in hand. Very, very lucky Tina. Rainbows always eclipse me. But maybe one day 😊 Always a bit of wet before a rainbow appears 😂

  4. I too love seeing rainbows, though like you it’s not often I have a camera to hand! Fogbows are pretty spectacular too, but I have never seen one of those. Have you?
