How Sweet It Is
“To a hungry person, every bitter food is sweet. When the preferable is not available, the available becomes preferable.”
Israelmore Ayivor
This week’s “sweet” challenge was indeed a challenge for me. I don’t do food photography, and I don’t have pets. While I happen to think my husband is truly sweet, I’m not sure that would translate for most people 😊.
“That it will never come again is what makes life so sweet.”
Emily Dickinson
Then it hit me – our island is home to the sweetest little creatures – our white-tailed deer. When I lived in the northeast the deer were much larger and there was a constant conversation about how to control their numbers. Here on our island the perfect solution exists with no human intervention whatsoever. Our deer population is very well-managed by our beautiful bobcats. They are quite proficient in hunting the fawns throughout the island. Nature can be cruel but somehow both the deer and the bobcat populations continue to be perfectly balanced.
“Life is like that…sometimes you have to peel off the bitterness in order to get to the part that is sweet.”
Ken Poirot
One of my favorite things about our deer is how accustomed they’ve become to having humans nearby. The capture above was made with an 18-35mm lens and is only very slightly cropped. As for the size of the population, all of today’s choices were made this week during a brief deer-hunting walk with my Fuji X-T2. Seems to me the deer are as happy with the arrival of our spring-like temps as I am. As Jackie Gleason would say…How sweet it is!

nice of those guys to pose for u!!! great lens for the close ups….not to mention your brilliant eye!!!
😊😊thanks April
Oh so sweet Tina, you have nailed the challenge….
What beautiful creatures. Although nature can be cruel, I am glad that she is keeping the populations in balance.
They are adorable!!
Deer oh deer! Love the comment about hubby Tina. Great photos with your Fuji. Have a great week.
LOL re deer oh dear Andrew! And a great week to you too
They are very sweet, Tina. Enjoyed the history of the white-tailed deer on your island too.
Do you encounter the bobcat sometimes? The Fuji X-T2 is impressive! 🙂
Thanks Dina-yes we do see the bobcats now and then. They are adorable!
That last photo is particularly nice.
Great interpretation of the theme, Tina. They do indeed look sweet!
Thanks Terri!

Beautiful photo’s,Tina!
Thanks Dina!
It looked like a wonderful walk, Tina. The deers certainly don’t look like they are afraid of humans. I am sure both you and your husband are looking pretty sweet or else the animals would have run the other way 😊 So lovely to hear you are having great fun with your Fuji 🙂 Love the quote by Emily Dickinson. So often we look back on the past and reminisce of what has been. Past is past but sometimes it makes us a bit more happier when we take a trip down memory lane. Wishing you a good end to winter… Almost autumn here in Australia and I so wish summer would stick around lol.
It was a lovely walk indeed Mabel, glad you enjoyed this one. We’re coming into our spring now and it’s my favorite time of year here so I’m a happy girl! Enjoy your beautiful autumn – I think I could do with summer all year too!

Sweet photos, Tina! Too bad that the “relatives” of your deer eat everything in my yard:(. In fact, I call them “pigs with horns” — just kidding (sort of)!
LOL re pigs with horns Svetlana 😀😀. There’s so much for them to eat around here I guess they don’t need to bother with our landscaping!
Lucky you! 🙂
Deer are the ultimate sweet animals, in my opinion. Charming and delicate – and great pics!
Thanks Lex, yes, they’re charming indeed. Somehow Bambi comes to mind LOL.
Hilton Head had a considerable deer over-population some decades back (I haven’t kept up). They had to be human-culled. Beautiful creatures. Love your work with that X-T2.
Thanks John, must admit I’m really enjoying it. As for the deer, our little bobcats seem to be getting the job done quite nicely so far. The gators have a bit of a hand (or tooth) in it as well.
Both the images and quotes are sweet. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure SIW, thanks for your visit and comment
Sweet indeed. Now you have whetted my appetite for a bobcat. But I am guessing they are slightly more illusive.
Ask and you shall receive Jude 😊. This little guy sat on my bicycle path one day a year or two back. He actually posed quite nicely – almost unheard of as they are very skittish. While they don’t fear us they avoid us as best they can. I’ve only seen them a handful of times in my 18 years on the island. https://travelsandtrifles.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/cat-copy.jpg
Oh, wow! He doesn’t look big enough to bring down one of those deer.
We have a lot of deer in our area. They’re sweet as long as they stay off the road. 🙄
So true Dorothy – we’ve had our share of road issues. Fortunately we have very low speed limits on the island and are all aware that they’re everywhere as we make our way around. Yesterday as I was returning home from a golf outing a bobcat ran right in front of my car to cross the road. Happily he made his way safely across!
Deer whistles help, too. I put them on my car and so far (touch wood) no close encounters. … May your encounters with deer always be sweet ones 😊
wonderful shots. 18-35? wow! that’s close.
Yep, I could actually have moved even closer but didn’t want to frighten them. Thanks for stopping by!

Good choice for the challenge. The deer in our yard are sweet too – as long as they aren’t eating a favorite plant. 😉
LOL, there is that! We work hard to avoid their favorites 😊
Gorgeous!
Thanks Sue—they’re such a nice wildlife feature
Certainly are!
Dickinson is one of my favorite poets, and your deer are very sweet. Lovely combo.
Thanks Leya, glad this one appealed!
They always do, Tina!
Breathtaking pictures, Tina. They indeed look comfortable with humans around. And this is such a terrific line: “To a hungry person, every bitter food is sweet. When the preferable is not available, the available becomes preferable.”
Thanks Mahesh, I loved that quote too
Always enjoy your images and quotes.
Many thanks Sally-a lovely compliment from the master
Really nice shots of the sweet things.
Thanks Sharon. Were your ears burning yesterday while Diane and I walked 18? 😊
Tina, I think you count for sweetness, you should be in the picture….. ‘Life is like that’ is a tag line on my blog. Perpetua
Well you just made my day Perpetua—many thanks!!
That quote is quite amazing.
Thanks, I thought so too!
They look adorable Tina, what a blessing to walk among all this sweetness! 😄💖 xxx
Absolutely Xenia, they are such peaceful little creatures
Niceeeee
Thankssss 😊
Urw dear
You are welcome dear😍
Nice choice, Tina. I’m having trouble deciding what to do about the photo challenge. I usually have to work on Wednesday, starting right when the theme comes out and I’m not home until evening. Thursday I do Thursday Doors…etc. So I either have to wait until evening to post and then have a post right away the next morning or wait until Friday (Friday Flowers) or… Sigh. 🙂 Hope you have a lovely weekend.
When I read “How sweet it is”, I hear Jackie Gleason saying that on “The Honeymooners.” Wow, am I old!! 🙂
janet
Definitely the honeymooners Janet. Guess I’m old too LOL. I join your frustration w the challenge’s timing. Wish they’d go back to Friday. Sigh
They are truly sweet and you captured them so perfectly well with your camera. Great choices of the quotes as well.
Thanks very much Anita. Nice of them to pose, wasn’t it?😊
Beautiful nature shots, Tina! This was a challenging theme for me too. I like the direction you’ve taken. We have to visit your island on one of our trips. It is very beautiful.
Thanks Patti-as they say on TV…..Come on Down!”
We will plan to do that. 🙂
Beautiful shots of the deer on your island! I am wondering whether being on an island leads to much inbreeding among the deer.
Thanks Hien. No, we’ve not had any issues with inbreeding, our deer are very healthy and have easy access to other areas. I’ve often seen them swimming across the marsh!
