Lens-Artists Challenge #155 – On The Water

shrimp boat
The Tina Marie

“My soul is full of longing for the secret of the sea.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

This week our guest host John has asked us to interpret “On the Water”, which for John no doubt brings visions of amazing luxury liners who cruise the world’s most beautiful places. I’ve taken rather a different approach this week, exploring some thoughts about the way earth’s waters sustain us and the many creatures who depend on it (such as the lurking gator in today’s header 😊) My opening image above features a shrimp boat setting out to sea at daybreak. Looking rather weather-worn, her nets poised for action, with any luck she will deliver a fine catch of delicious fresh shrimp from our local waters.

Lovely Loon

“The loons! The loons! They’re welcoming us back.”

Ethel Thayer

In the image above, a beautiful loon floats serenely on the waters of Lake Arbutus. I’ve included it this week to honor good friends who summer on the lake in Michigan. Over the years during our many wonderful visits, the song of the loons welcomed us back. Recently our friends sold their summer home to a couple we all hope will love it, and those loons, as much as we have.

water lily
Pretty in Pink

“Like the lily, I rest on the deep water’s surface. Not knowing the journey’s end, I rest in nature’s embrace.”

Patricia Robin Woodruff

Like the birds and the creatures of the sea, plants and flowers depend on earth’s waters for their sustenance. Water lilies for example are born in the soil beneath the waters, rising up through them in their journey toward its surface. They create shade and protection for fish in landscape ponds, and provide a resting spot for frogs and dragonflies. The lily above was located in the amazing gardens of Asheville, North Carolina’s Biltmore Mansion. The mansion and its gardens are well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.

clouds, reflections
Upon Reflection

“I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now.”

Joni Mitchell

While I have no doubt the image above is well outside of John’s intent with his challenge, in fact the reflection of the overhead clouds is definitely “on the water”, don’t you think? Here in the south there is nothing more welcome than the white fluffy clouds that provide a bit of shelter from the heat of the summer sun.

cruise, boat, harbor
Dichotomy

“A ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.”

John Augustus Shedd

Finally, an image from a visit to Bar Harbor, Maine. I loved the dichotomy of the smaller crafts made minute by the size of the visiting cruise ship. By cruising standards the ship is relatively small. On the other hand, the two-masted sailboat, quite large by sailboat standards, seems minuscule when positioned beside it. Think of it as a reminder that whenever our problems appear major, when compared with those of so many others, they are merely a drop in the ocean.

Sincere thanks to those who responded to last week’s “One Photo Two Ways”. It was really interesting to see the many ways we can interpret the scenes and subjects on which we choose to focus. We look forward to seeing your responses to John’s challenge this week. Please remember to link them to his original post and to use the Lens-Artists Tag to help us find you. Finally, a reminder that next week’s guest host will be Anne Sandler of Slow Shutter Speed who will challenge us with Black & White. Until then, please stay safe and be kind.

Note: I’ll be on the road next week but will do my best to stay in touch. Apologies in advance if I’m a bit late in responding

  2. Hi Tina
Well the shrimp boat has such amazing symmetry and nice details – and hey- it is the Tina Marie (is your middle name Marie?)
The Shedd quote is inspiring to get moving and use one’s skills and all that- and did like the Cloud reflections and how you integrated it
But still wondering what Joni Mitchell quite means – is it from a plane and then below ? Or figurative ?

    • Thanks Yvette. Yes ma’am, my middle name is indeed Marie. Serendipity, no?! Re Joni, I think she means you can look at clouds either positively or negatively right? Much needed shade or rain, fluffy beautiful skies, or harbingers of a terrible storm. Kind of like life in general, right?

      • ahhhh – yes Tina – thanks for the expanding – I get it now – lol – and really like how you explained that take

  3. There was a reason you put the Tina Marie as your first, LOL. 🙂 😉

BTW, I’ll send you a quick email about Saratoga. I was planning to send it earlier, but a crashed laptop got in the way.

  6. Beautiful images and I love the quotes too. I’m especially drawn to the “Pretty in PInk” with the accompanying quote about resting “in nature’s embrace”. So lovely. Thank you.

  8. I scrolled through your amazing water shots on my phone but then couldn’t comment, so I had to come back to tell you how much I enjoyed these views, Tina! That shrimp boat is really something from this perspective, not something we see every day! Hope you enjoyed your Independence Day holiday!

  9. Always, always fantastic images, Tina! I do love that shrimp boat! Upon reflection must be my absolute favourite this week! Enjoy your vacation!

    • Thanks very much Judy, getting there slow but sure. For the shrimp boat I was actually on the water headed to another photo shoot when he came by just after sunrise. It was a chance encounter and one of the highlights of a great day

  11. Beautiful photo of the clouds reflected in water.

I can’t help laugh at the difference in sizes between the small boats and that cruise ship. I’ll take the boats any day!

  12. The loon is my favorite. We used to have a summer place on a lake here and I took part in the Canadian Lakes Loon survey. Each year a pair would arrive on our bay and they there would be two little ones. The parents would leave them and fly away in the autumn and then the youngsters would follow. I enjoyed all your photos Tina but the loon brought back many good memories.

  13. Beautiful selections, Tina. The boat is selling gracefully. The reflections of the third one is fabulous.
I’m running late for this one, will have it posted tomorrow.

    • Thanks Jane. Rare to get so close to them on the water – this one was headed out as I was on a boat going to shoot the crab bank before the storm got it. They were very friendly and in good spirits. A very lucky encounter!

  14. I love the variety of your shots but also the clever way you’ve linked them together. The head-on shrimp boat shot is very effective, and I love your waterlily and your cloud reflections – and the Joni quote too 🙂

  16. Great collection, Tina. When I was at the North Sea, I hoped for capturing a shrimps catcher, but I only was aware of boats far, far away and sailing with the nets pulled up. IMHO, they were on their way to the fishing grounds. So, I only have them in the harbor. I also love your loon. 👍

    • Thank you Andre – we have shrimp boats coming quite close to shore here. They’re amazing old crafts – often I’m surprised they’re still afloat. It’s a hard life for them for sure.

      • I guess, you’re right. Only few of them are left in Germany and the Netherlands. In the past, in each town at the coast many fishermen’s families made their living from catching shrimps. Nowadays, …….

  17. Beautiful. I think I’d like to go for a short swim, or maybe a short boat ride. Or maybe just sit on the pier or patio with a cup of iced tea watching the water. 🙂

    • Thanks Nora – I’d never seen one until we went to Michigan and it’s the only place still that I’ve ever seen them. They’re a very beautiful bird and their song is amazing.

  18. You always have a way of honoring where you have been but bringing it forward to a relevance today.. special, hi ring, remembering, reflecting .
.always the cream rising tothe top

  19. Great take on this challenge Tina! I love the shrimping boat and the reflection. Water is so important to us in every way. Let’s appreciate its beauty and utility.

  20. Really love these Tina! Especially the shrimping trawler… do I remember that as your middle name? Love you..Roo.

  21. Lovely images, Tina, and lovely thoughts. I love the contrast of the smaller boats and the cruise ship. Your first image of the shrimp boat is wonderful! And that loon is fabulous! I love their calls. So evocative of summer! I hope you can relax and enjoy your break this month!

    • I hear you John – sadly those shrimp boat captains and crew work very long, very hard hours for very little reward. They do it for the love of it and there are fewer of them every year.

  22. hey there….really gorgeous water shots…actually dreamy!! YES the clouds r definitely sitting on top of the water!!! Thanks for the pick up on this very dreary rainy…actually 3rd day in a row here in NY. Happy 4th!!!

    • Bummer about the rain but if it’s anything like here it is much needed. Forecast calls for serious storms here this week. We shall see. Thanks for the visit and comment April

  23. Tina, I always love your photos and always learn something new each time…never new that lilies are born in the soil beneath!
Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July!
