Lens-Artists Challenge #155 – On The Water
“My soul is full of longing for the secret of the sea.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
This week our guest host John has asked us to interpret “On the Water”, which for John no doubt brings visions of amazing luxury liners who cruise the world’s most beautiful places. I’ve taken rather a different approach this week, exploring some thoughts about the way earth’s waters sustain us and the many creatures who depend on it (such as the lurking gator in today’s header 😊) My opening image above features a shrimp boat setting out to sea at daybreak. Looking rather weather-worn, her nets poised for action, with any luck she will deliver a fine catch of delicious fresh shrimp from our local waters.
“The loons! The loons! They’re welcoming us back.”
Ethel Thayer
In the image above, a beautiful loon floats serenely on the waters of Lake Arbutus. I’ve included it this week to honor good friends who summer on the lake in Michigan. Over the years during our many wonderful visits, the song of the loons welcomed us back. Recently our friends sold their summer home to a couple we all hope will love it, and those loons, as much as we have.
“Like the lily, I rest on the deep water’s surface. Not knowing the journey’s end, I rest in nature’s embrace.”
Patricia Robin Woodruff
Like the birds and the creatures of the sea, plants and flowers depend on earth’s waters for their sustenance. Water lilies for example are born in the soil beneath the waters, rising up through them in their journey toward its surface. They create shade and protection for fish in landscape ponds, and provide a resting spot for frogs and dragonflies. The lily above was located in the amazing gardens of Asheville, North Carolina’s Biltmore Mansion. The mansion and its gardens are well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.
“I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now.”
Joni Mitchell
While I have no doubt the image above is well outside of John’s intent with his challenge, in fact the reflection of the overhead clouds is definitely “on the water”, don’t you think? Here in the south there is nothing more welcome than the white fluffy clouds that provide a bit of shelter from the heat of the summer sun.
“A ship in a harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.”
John Augustus Shedd
Finally, an image from a visit to Bar Harbor, Maine. I loved the dichotomy of the smaller crafts made minute by the size of the visiting cruise ship. By cruising standards the ship is relatively small. On the other hand, the two-masted sailboat, quite large by sailboat standards, seems minuscule when positioned beside it. Think of it as a reminder that whenever our problems appear major, when compared with those of so many others, they are merely a drop in the ocean.
Sincere thanks to those who responded to last week’s “One Photo Two Ways”. It was really interesting to see the many ways we can interpret the scenes and subjects on which we choose to focus. We look forward to seeing your responses to John’s challenge this week. Please remember to link them to his original post and to use the Lens-Artists Tag to help us find you. Finally, a reminder that next week’s guest host will be Anne Sandler of Slow Shutter Speed who will challenge us with Black & White. Until then, please stay safe and be kind.
Note: I’ll be on the road next week but will do my best to stay in touch. Apologies in advance if I’m a bit late in responding
Beautiful images Tina.

Hi Tina
Well the shrimp boat has such amazing symmetry and nice details – and hey- it is the Tina Marie (is your middle name Marie?)
The Shedd quote is inspiring to get moving and use one’s skills and all that- and did like the Cloud reflections and how you integrated it
But still wondering what Joni Mitchell quite means – is it from a plane and then below ? Or figurative ?
Thanks Yvette. Yes ma’am, my middle name is indeed Marie. Serendipity, no?! Re Joni, I think she means you can look at clouds either positively or negatively right? Much needed shade or rain, fluffy beautiful skies, or harbingers of a terrible storm. Kind of like life in general, right?
ahhhh – yes Tina – thanks for the expanding – I get it now – lol – and really like how you explained that take
Lovely images .and write up
Reblogged this on .
There was a reason you put the Tina Marie as your first, LOL. 🙂 😉
BTW, I’ll send you a quick email about Saratoga. I was planning to send it earlier, but a crashed laptop got in the way.

Beautiful images and I love the quotes too. I’m especially drawn to the “Pretty in PInk” with the accompanying quote about resting “in nature’s embrace”. So lovely. Thank you.
Patricia Robin Woodruff
Thanks very much Patricia, glad those caught your eye

Wow! What great photos for the challenge, Tina. That shot of the shrimp boat is really impressive! And the image of the cloud reflections is beautiful.
Many thanks Sue. The boat was a lovely chance encounter one morning as I was headed out for a photo shoot on a nearby island.
Your first photo looks like a giant seabird landing gracefully on the water. Great shot!
Love that thought, thanks Siobhan
I scrolled through your amazing water shots on my phone but then couldn’t comment, so I had to come back to tell you how much I enjoyed these views, Tina! That shrimp boat is really something from this perspective, not something we see every day! Hope you enjoyed your Independence Day holiday!
Thanks Terri. We are out of town and I’m using my iPhone to blog. Ugh!! I was actually on the water headed to another photo shoot when it came by. Serendipitous chance encounter
Enjoy your holiday, Tina! I hate using phones too!
Always, always fantastic images, Tina! I do love that shrimp boat! Upon reflection must be my absolute favourite this week! Enjoy your vacation!
Thanks Ann-Christine. They really are majestic old beauties…hopefully what others think about some of US 😀😀
😀 ;-D 😀
That lily is a STUNNER! Hope you are out doing something fun!
Thanks Pam! Visiting much-missed family in Colorado Beautiful country out here
Oh wonderful!!!! Have a wonderful time! It’s not too hot right now 😊
Beautiful images Tina, I especially love the way you captured the gorgeous loon. Wishing you happy travels and may you stay safe and well too xxx
Many thanks Xenia, they are beautiful birds and their song is really special.

Amazing photos, but that shrimp boat took my breath away. Amazing shot. Hope things are proceeding forward for you on a personal level.
Thanks very much Judy, getting there slow but sure. For the shrimp boat I was actually on the water headed to another photo shoot when he came by just after sunrise. It was a chance encounter and one of the highlights of a great day
No matter the theme, interesting how once looks beyond the obvious, people can provide a variety of aspects. Well done, Tina. Happy Holiday Weekend.
Many thanks Frank – and the same to you!
Beautiful photo of the clouds reflected in water.
I can’t help laugh at the difference in sizes between the small boats and that cruise ship. I’ll take the boats any day!
Thanks I.J. It was a really beautiful day
The loon is my favorite. We used to have a summer place on a lake here and I took part in the Canadian Lakes Loon survey. Each year a pair would arrive on our bay and they there would be two little ones. The parents would leave them and fly away in the autumn and then the youngsters would follow. I enjoyed all your photos Tina but the loon brought back many good memories.
Thanks Anne. The only time I’ve seen them is in Michigan. They are so majestic
And their cries at night especially are so hauntingly beautiful. I miss them.
Agree wholeheartedly
That boat is named appropriately for your Tina. I absolutely love that photo. Spectacular. 😀 😀
Thanks Cee, the boats are iconic here in the south but there are fewer every year. And yes, the name was a draw for me also 😊
Beautiful selections, Tina. The boat is selling gracefully. The reflections of the third one is fabulous.
I’m running late for this one, will have it posted tomorrow.
Thanks Amy, no worries re posting!
Love the Trawler and the water lily is striking. Great photos on the water Tina 🙂 🙂
Thanks Brian? Much appreciated
Nice shots. I especially liked the perspective of the shrimp boat – up close and personal
Thanks Jane. Rare to get so close to them on the water – this one was headed out as I was on a boat going to shoot the crab bank before the storm got it. They were very friendly and in good spirits. A very lucky encounter!
I love the variety of your shots but also the clever way you’ve linked them together. The head-on shrimp boat shot is very effective, and I love your waterlily and your cloud reflections – and the Joni quote too 🙂
Thanks Sarah – I did rather move all over the map on this one LOL
I like the shot of the fishing boat because of it’s symetrie.
Thanks very much, she seems to be the star this week.

Love that shrimp boat!
Thank Sue – she’s a grand old lady isn’t she?!
Most certainly!
Love the Tina Marie…just wondering if a pirate will come out of there!
LOL I suppose one never knows Teresa!
😀
Great collection, Tina. When I was at the North Sea, I hoped for capturing a shrimps catcher, but I only was aware of boats far, far away and sailing with the nets pulled up. IMHO, they were on their way to the fishing grounds. So, I only have them in the harbor. I also love your loon. 👍
Thank you Andre – we have shrimp boats coming quite close to shore here. They’re amazing old crafts – often I’m surprised they’re still afloat. It’s a hard life for them for sure.
I guess, you’re right. Only few of them are left in Germany and the Netherlands. In the past, in each town at the coast many fishermen’s families made their living from catching shrimps. Nowadays, …….
Beautiful post, Tina, with wonderful pictures.
Thanks very much Ana, glad you enjoyed these
Lovely images for Indian summer
Many thanks – we’ve got true summer here!
Beautiful. I think I’d like to go for a short swim, or maybe a short boat ride. Or maybe just sit on the pier or patio with a cup of iced tea watching the water. 🙂
All perfect options Marsha! Thanks
It’s nice to be always write! 🙂
Love the quotes and those beautiful clicks especially the
Tina Marie.
Thank you Tina Schell
Thanks Philo – My full name is Tina Marie so that was quite a fun encounter!
Wow! What a pleasant coincidence!
I love the photo of the loon!! I’ve never seen one
Thanks Nora – I’d never seen one until we went to Michigan and it’s the only place still that I’ve ever seen them. They’re a very beautiful bird and their song is amazing.
Delightful post!
Thanks very much Michele
My pleasure!
I love loons. Don’t hear them much where we live, though when I was growing up in north-east Washington, they were a mainstay at lakes where my family camped.
We don’t have them here either Lindy – we only see them when we visit our friends in Michigan
You always have a way of honoring where you have been but bringing it forward to a relevance today.. special, hi ring, remembering, reflecting .
.always the cream rising tothe top
Many thanks Miss Linda – some very fond memories there.
Great take on this challenge Tina! I love the shrimping boat and the reflection. Water is so important to us in every way. Let’s appreciate its beauty and utility.
With you 100% Anne – both in terms of water’s importance and its beauty
Really love these Tina! Especially the shrimping trawler… do I remember that as your middle name? Love you..Roo.
Good memory Roo, those are indeed my first AND middle names!
HA!! Sometimes I surprise myself! Happy 4th!!
All beautiful. I do love the idea of the clouds on the water!
Thanks very much Lisa – it was a really beautiful sky that day.
Tina–that shrimp boat is beautiful! We have them here, but not like the glory that you have captured.
Many thanks Lois. I was actually on the water that morning as the sun was rising – quite unusual for me. They were quite majestic.
You have put together a nice collection of images on the water. The shrimp boat is my favorite but the clouds reflecting on the water is a close second.
Thanks Beth – I’m sure you too are visited by shrimp boats down there. I so admire their dedication and perseverance
wow. Great photos Tina, but that banner shot is CREEPY! I love the trawler photos and the marsh reflection in particular.
LOL, creepy is such a strong word John – remember his mother really loves him! Glad you enjoyed my friend.
Lovely images, Tina, and lovely thoughts. I love the contrast of the smaller boats and the cruise ship. Your first image of the shrimp boat is wonderful! And that loon is fabulous! I love their calls. So evocative of summer! I hope you can relax and enjoy your break this month!
Many thanks Patti – looking forward to getting away from ALL of it for at least a little while. We’ll see how successful I am!
My heart is on that cruise ship, but I really enjoy images of working ships. I guess a cruise ship is also a working ship, but they are kept “too nice.”
I hear you John – sadly those shrimp boat captains and crew work very long, very hard hours for very little reward. They do it for the love of it and there are fewer of them every year.
hey there….really gorgeous water shots…actually dreamy!! YES the clouds r definitely sitting on top of the water!!! Thanks for the pick up on this very dreary rainy…actually 3rd day in a row here in NY. Happy 4th!!!
Bummer about the rain but if it’s anything like here it is much needed. Forecast calls for serious storms here this week. We shall see. Thanks for the visit and comment April
Tina, I always love your photos and always learn something new each time…never new that lilies are born in the soil beneath!
Hope you have a wonderful 4th of July!
Thanks Laurel and the same to you. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t know it either. Found out when I googled them!
All the photos work well, but that shrimp boat is so graceful from that angle and your photo emphasizes that beautifully.
janet
Many thanks Janet – they have such a hard life, but we love to see them and especially love their catch!
