Lens-Artists Challenge #167 – The Colors of Autumn

“The leaves are changing, I feel poetry in the air.”

Laura Jaworski

Here on Kiawah autumn is a time when most of our seasonal visitors return to their “normal” lives, leaving us to enjoy what is arguably the best weather of the year. We continue to enjoy warm temperatures minus our summer humidity levels. Our trees and flowers remain in full bloom and our marsh grasses, while still green, begin to develop their golden hues. We cross our fingers in hopes that the hurricane season will pass without impact, leaving us peacefully content to enjoy warm breezes and beautiful sunshine.

“Autumn had arrived—the last blossom whispered, let me stay awhile.”

Meeta Ahluwalia

Amy’s challenge for the week was a bit early as things go here in the southern U.S., but I was able to find a few “autumn-ish” sights, including the camera pan of the reeds above and the branch that follows. The egret in my opening capture is from my archives and is a favorite among my many images of these beautiful birds.

“…life keeps pouring out, it never stops — Like the autumn leaves;breath by breath, they’re falling off.”

Soroosh Shahriva

Amy’s discussion about why leaves lose their color reminded me of the image that follows. I captured it last autumn as the season’s chill finally began to kiss the trees. To me it’s a lovely example of autumn’s splendor.

“And the sun took a step back, the leaves lulled themselves to sleep and autumn was awakened.”

Raquel Franco

I would be remiss if I did not include the real harbinger of autumn on Kiawah, our beautiful sweetgrass. I’ve featured many a sweetgrass image on previous posts, but since our sweetgrass is not yet blooming, I’ve included a favorite image captured back in Autumn of 2019.

“The birds will wing from the weather, While I stand, still as the harvest, With the sound of the fall in the air.”

Carolyn Kizer

But enough about Kiawah – where autumn simply does not align with the sights and sensations most of us associate with the season. I captured the image below while visiting family in New York state at the height of autumn. The sight of the hay bales surrounded by the colorful trees is what “true” autumn looks and feels like to me. Can’t you just smell the leaves and taste the hot cuppa waiting for you beside a cozy fire back home?

John Mark Green

I’ll close today’s post with a final image – a reminder that autumn’s colors can be found in many forms, not the least of which is a glass masterpiece by the artist Dale Chihuly.

A warm thank-you to Amy for her lovely challenge. Please remember to link your responses to her original post here. Thank you also to Ann-Christine for her very creative Artificial Lights challenge – we loved seeing your examples from the world over – despite a universal sentiment that we photographers tend to focus much more frequently on natural light! Finally, I hope you’ll join me next week right here on Travels and Trifles for our next challenge “Seen Better Days” where we’ll ask you to feature old, dilapidated or otherwise worn out subjects in your images. Until then, as always please stay safe and be kind.

  2. Beautiful, beautiful, Tina! As always you have enchanting images and quotes. I so love the grasses, and the egrets in the sweet grass take my breath away… Chihuly is also a stunner. Lovely post.

  3. Such beautiful remembrances of fall, especially the single leaf and the yellows of New York. You definitely paint pretty pictures with your camera eye, and we’re the recipients. Thanks for setting the tone for this challenge.

  7. Hi Tina

Your Great Egret is a real stunner! And I love this quote: “The leaves are changing, I feel poetry in the air.” Laura Jaworski I get Fall Fever the way other people get Spring Fever, and her quote perfectly captures the feeling. Your Egrets and Sweetgrass is a visual feast. Egret sightings at my lake are rare, few and far between and there has never been more than one solitary Egret present at a time, it would be heavenly to behold what your photo offers.

The is my LAPC offering for the Colors of Autumn offering, with a Great Blue Heron, red leaves, and a very a big fish:

  8. All beautiful selections of Autumn, Tina.
I love to see the egrets among the reeds in the water.
It always reminds me of a painting.
Chihuly was a glass artist when I started doing art shows.
A bit more famous then I ever got. LOL
    Have a wonderful week …
    Isadora 😎

  9. In all that overwhelming gold, I like the spectacular white of the egrets. Decaying leaves can be so pretty. Your four-gingered beauty is specially nice: also reminded me of the rough-in-smooth texture of some starfish

  10. Like how you framed the hay bales with the tree branches in the autumn in NY shot and the white egret really stands out against the color of the autumn grasses. But my favorite is the Egrets and Sweetgrass shot. Well done Tina 🙂

  11. Such lovely images, Tina. I love your golden hues of the grasses. Your header image was just lovely. You even found beauty in shriveled leaves! I think our traditional autumn views of New England are our stereotype of the fall, but the beauty in other parts of the country shouldn’t be missed! I hope you’re successfully avoiding the hurricanes. Who knows what to expect this year with so many expectations turned on their heads!

    • It’s a toss-up for me between spring and fall Karen. Summers here can get pretty oppressive (although I don’t mind is as much as my husband does) and if there was never another winter I wouldn’t miss it one bit! Thanks for stopping by.

      • Growing up in coastal southern cities has cemented my love of seeing the leaves turn (since I never saw them at home). And I love fall decorations! Unlike South Florida, I can leave pumpkins outside for weeks in the cooler, crisp air.

  14. I am much more a fan of spring, but these were great…especially loved the single egret and the egrets and sweet grass photo.

  15. Tina, the autumn colors of Kiawah may not be what many people think of when they think about autumn colors but I love them! Your images showcase the fall beauty that is found in the southeast marshes. The egret standing in the marsh is my favorite. The marsh here is still vibrant green.

    • Here too Beth – that one is from the archives. I struggled a bit with this one but it came together in the end. You and I are at a bit of a disadvantage on this one from a timing perspective!

  16. Hi tina – I do know the grasses you have featured and they always delight! Same thing with chihuly glass art- never enough.
The post also moved in tempo for me – energized with opening egret and grasses and then slowed down with last breath and the “coat”
leaf (it had a leather feel to me) and then energized again after that. ☀️🍁

  17. A beautiful collections for this season, Tina. Happy to see these bird images, so is the colors of Chihuly’s glass work. The panning shot is glorious.
We probably won’t see color changes here until the end of Oct. and into November.
