Lens-Artists Challenge #217 – Opposites

Sunrise – Sunset

“Opposites are not contradictory but complementary.”

Niels Bohr

How many times have you heard the phrase “opposites attract”? Having heard it, have you ever really thought about it? Whether yes or no, this is your chance to focus on it by sharing some examples of opposites through your images. Sunrise/sunset as above, or black/white as below are two examples of opposites in nature. Can you think of others?

White and Black

“God turns you from one feeling to another and teaches by means of opposites so that you will have two wings to fly, not one.”

Rumi

As the hours of the day tick by, surely night will follow. Days will become weeks, months, seasons and years. Plants and animals understand and adapt naturally, while we humans have for the most part learned to overcome nature’s cycles using artificial lighting and temperature controls.

Day and Night

“Light is meaningful only in relation to darkness.”

Louis Aragon

Kiawah’s birds present many examples of opposites – not only due to their coloring but also in their behavior – for example this little Painted Bunting clearly enjoying a splash in our neighbors’ bird bath 😊.

Dry and Wet

“The interplay of opposite principles constitutes the universe.”

Confucius

Of course opposites can also be found in mankind’s many creations. For example, there’s more than one way to provide (or deny) entry:

door, staircase, red, lock, chandelier
Open and Shut

“Luxury is the opposite of the naturally necessary.”

Karl Marx

There’s also more than one way to get from here to there:

car, antique, red, sorty
Old and New(er) or Should It Be Slow and Fast ?!

“Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards.”

Aldous Huxley

And last but not least, how much of anything do we ever REALLY need???

tennis, ball, cans
One vs Many

“In the black, there is some white, in the wrong, there is some right, in the dark, there is some light, in the blind, there is some sight.”

Abhinyana

I’ll close with thanks to Sofia for last week’s Urban Environments challenge. It was fun stepping out of my normal environment to put a response together. It was even more fun seeing the many urban examples you all shared! This week we invite you to show us some opposites – big and small, round and square, new and old….when you start to think about it, they’re everywhere! Be sure to link your response to my original, and to use the Lens-Artists Tag to help us find you. We look forward to seeing what you come up with. Finally, we’re excited to announce that next week’s Guest Host will be Donna of Wind Kisses so be sure to check out her always wonderful site. Until then, as always please stay safe and be kind.
