Retrospective Part II
“Everything, in retrospect, is obvious.”
Michael Lewis
Like the shrimp boats in my opening capture, 2016 is heading off into the horizon, making way for another New Year. It was quite an eventful year for us. We moved to a new home, experienced our first hurricane, enjoyed travels with family and friends, and closed the year with a crisis that reminded us that everything else pales in comparison to the health of our loved ones. Here then, some personal 2016 favorites.
“What the new year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the new year.”
Vern McLellan
One of my favorite shoots this year was a boat trip to nearby Deveaux Bank. The oystercatchers above and the sunrise below were both taken that beautiful morning on the water with good friends and fellow photographers.
“To see the first sun rise in New Year is the most sacredness of existence.”
Lailah Gifty Akita
Yet another special outing was my session with renowned photographer Joyce Tenneson, focused on the beauty and ethereal nature of trees.
“Every New Year must be celebrated at the heart of nature.”
Mehmet Murat Ildan
Like Mr. Ildan, I’m a firm believer in the heart of nature. A few of those favorites:
“Let us believe in a long year that is given to us, new, untouched, full of things that have never been.”
Rainer Maria Rilke
“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning, but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.”
Hal Borland
“A new year has tiptoed in, let’s go forward to meet it.”
Anusha Atukorala
Finally, a few favorites from 2016’s travels:
An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”
Bill Vaughn
“The object of a new year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul.”
G.K. Chesterton
“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.”
Oprah Winfrey
“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come.”
Alfred Lord Tennyson
“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
It seems appropriate to close the year’s retrospective with a sunset, as we await the dawn of the new year. To those who expressed concern, my sincere thanks. My husband is in the midst of a health issue and I am doing my best to help him through. Happily it seems we’ve about turned the corner (still resilient 🙂) along with the year’s last page!
My best wishes to all for a happy and healthy New Year.
stunning photos, Tina…

I remember so many of these shots, Tina, it was so good to revisit them again! I was happy to read that your husband is on the mend, I hope that his forward progress continues and you will soon be putting the scare behind you. 2016 was a tough year for so many people, my hope is for a brighter 2017. xx

Lovely look back on your ear that was in photos, Tina. I really like the Emerson quote. There is hope and joy in everyday if we slow down enough to look. I think this is very much reflected in your work and your shots – like how you are willing to rise for a sunrise when you are not a morning person, from going out and staying late to capture blue hour. Each of your shots tells a story, a journey of where you’ve been and the simple things that are going on around you 🙂
Best wishes to your husband and good luck to you during this time x
Thanks very much Mabel – blogging is a nice outlet for our creative sides and helps us, I think, to see our efforts in a new light. Your comments about telling a story meant a lot to me. After all, IMHO that is what photography is all about. And thanks for your good wishes for my husband, he is improving day by day so we are on the right track! Happy New Year to you and yours.
Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks very much Slvrhawk

Gorgeous photos as always. Best wishes to you and your husband.
Thanks Gina – we’re getting along fine – one day at a time! Best to you in the new year.
Each one is a true beauty in its own way. Saffron & barn is a really neat change up of what may have been a just an ordinary view.
The quotes are terrific.
Email Message in transit … hope all is okay ..??
Thanks Diane – look forward to seeing you back in the bubble!
Gorgeous capture, Tina! I love the sunset picture. 🙂 May the New Year bring in countless opportunities to explore and discover the wonderful natural world we live in. Cheryl
Thanks so much Cheryl – and the same to you and yours.
Tina, as usual, I loved all of these, but the one with the barn and saffron really caught my eye. May your 2017 be filled with health, happiness, and fun.
janet
Thanks Janet – health, happiness and fun….what could be better than that?! The same to you my friend!
Absolutely gorgeous photos! I kept thinking I’d spotted my favorite, but then the next one was spectacular, too!
Wishing you a wonderful 2017!
Many thanks Melissa – and the best to you in the coming year as well!
Wonderful images, Tina.
(and have you changed font colour or is it my declining eyesight – I’ve had a bit of trouble reading on the internet lately)
Thanks Vicki – I did change my site and the font is what was automatically provided with the new theme. Haven’t had any complaints, sorry if it’s a challenge for you.
I often have trouble reading font on black backgrounds, so it’s probably me. My old blog has a black background, but my 2 current blogs have white which is definitely easier for my poor eyesight. I change WordPress theme every now and then myself, but usually look for easy to read font (with my extreme myopia and astigmatism).
Such beauty in the ordinary, loved your photo PASSING THROUGH THE PALOUSE.
Thank you Claudette – I hope some day to go back there with a bit more dedicated time. It broke my heart to pass by so many incredible scenes!! Happy New Year to you and yours.
gorgeous shots Tina…..brilliant words (as usual) and quotes…..thinking about you two this first day of the year….so glad the corner has been turned…..🌹
Thanks April, happy you enjoyed this one. It’s always fun going through the year’s efforts to choose some favorites. A bit like choosing which child you like best I suppose LOL!
Happy new year! Hope you have another year of wonderful photos ahead of you. My faces from your retrospective are the oyster catchers and the Palouse scene.
Thanks Maamej, those oyster catchers are quite funny in person with their long red beaks. Very Christmassy actually LOL. Happy New Year to you and yours.
Happy New Year Tina…. may it be blessed! Your images and your posts have been an inspiration and a joy! In peace Trees
What a lovely comment Trees, thanks so much. Wishing you a new year filled with joy and peace.
